History of Toroa

'Toroa' is the Maori name for the Royal Albatross, the magnificent long-distance sea bird that nests at the tip iof the Otago Peninsula. The albatross journeys far across the oceans of the world returning to Otago each year.
Our University owned residential college opened its doors in February 1996. Originally built to meet the growing demand of International students, Toroa was the only University of Otago Residential College to offer residents the choice of self-catered accommodation in a residential setting. These days Toroa offers residents the chance to decide on what suits them best in terms of food - they may have some meals prepared or they can cook for themselves.
'Manawa' , the Maori word for heart, was given to our community and administration building and has radiated warmth ever since.
Over the past fourteen years Toroa has established an enviable reputation for being a welcoming and friendly College. Now Toroa's residents are mostly first year students, from within New Zealand and around the world. Toroa embraces a true cosmopolitan community where manylifelong friendships are forged.
